Typeface Design
Design by Maria Pellegrino in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop
2024
Objective:
To design a typeface by using real world materials as inspiration.
Background:
Nova is a bold, geometric typeface inspired by the angular forms of triangular magnets, creating a strong, bold aesthetic that feels both futuristic and galactic. Its sharp, clean lines and modern, electronic vibe make it perfect for posters, signs, logos, and other 3-D design projects that aim to make a striking statement.
Target Audience:
The target audience for Nova includes designers, brands, and creatives looking for a modern, futuristic typeface to make a bold statement in tech, space, or electronic-themed projects. It appeals to industries such as entertainment, gaming, fashion, and any field that seeks to convey innovation and cutting-edge design.
Design Process:
To start this project, I drew inspiration from triangular magnets. I began by sketching different forms to explore the typeface's structure, then transferred my concepts into Adobe Illustrator to refine and create a cohesive design.
Design Solution:
As I transferred my sketches into Adobe Illustrator, I delved deeper into the form, adding rounded edges to each letter to create a cohesive look, similar to how the magnets fit together. The "k," "y," and "x" posed particular challenges due to their distinct shapes compared to the inspiration, but I developed innovative solutions to address these issues. Ultimately, I finalized the alphabet and named the typeface "Nova" to reflect the modern, otherworldly feel of the design.
