Takeaways from User Interviews

How might we simplify clothing donations to save time, effort, and reduce waste?

“I need an app that tells me what I can donate where, and takes care of how it gets there.”

Donorly helps users find where to donate what

Donorly matches user items to donation centers using item descriptions and current wishlists.

Donorly efficiently facilitates the donation pick-up

Donorly uses unique driverless vehicles to pick up users’ donation item(s) at the requested address
Users simply place their package into the driverless vehicle

Donorly leaves users feeling great after donating and inspires them to give again.

Donorly aligns donated items with current needs on donation centers' wishlists.
Users will be able to donate more frequently, increasing feelings of altruism / satisfaction

  • Age group - 18 to 50 years old; college kids, families, frequent movers

  • The San Francisco Bay Area

  • Middle-high income; anyone with disposable income

  • Advertise the app as a convenient, easy way to donate items.

  • Match user items to donation centers in need during verification.

  • Offer tailored solutions for different types of users.

  • Focus marketing on social interactions like 'refer a friend' campaigns.

  • Build trust with reputable centers and positive reviews.

We observed that donation services are not widely convenient, which is contributing to an increase in textile waste.

The average US consumer discards more than 81 pounds of clothing each year – an amount that has increased 55% since the year 2000 on a per capita basis.

Textiles are now the fastest-growing component of California’s landfills, comprising 3% of total landfilled waste, and the fifth-most common material overall.

1.2 million tons of textiles are disposed in California per year

Researching donation sites and transporting your unwanted items to them can be a daunting task, therefore it is typically easier to throw them away.

Users currently need to...

  • Find out where to donate

  • Figure out how to donate

  • Figure out when to donate

Interactive Prototype

You will be able to interact with the application here through an animated prototype / walk through of the UI screens designed by my team and I.
